The Max-Planck-Institute for Neurobiology of Behaviour – caesar (MPINB) is a neuroethology institute located in Bonn that studies how the collective activity of the vast numbers of interconnected neurons in the brain gives rise to the plethora of animal behaviors. Our research spans a large range of scales from the nano-scale imaging of brain circuitry, to large-scale functional imaging of brain circuitry during behavior, to the quantification of natural animal behaviors.

The Research Group „Neural Information Flow“ is doing research on the general principles of signal compression, attention and context-dependency in neural systems. To do this we concentrate on the foraging behavior of the roundworm C. elegans. To support our research we are looking for a

Student Assistant (m/f/div) - Neural Information flow
flexible hours / max. 20 hrs per week

to join us as soon as possible for max. 20 hrs per week. The position is initially limited to 6 months (extension is possible).

The project

To investigate the feeding behavior of roundworms, we are currently developing microscopy methods to either image large worm populations or multicolor tracking microscopes to visualize the neuronal activity of single worms.

The support we need

  • We are looking for someone to improve the robustness, ergonomics, and capabilities of our microscopes by expanding the software interface and by modifying the existing hardware design. The work requires programming in Python (including GUI frameworks, image analysis packages such as scikit-image or similar) and some experience working with optomechanical devices. An interest in animal behavior and in applying hardware solutions to behavioral imaging is desired.
  • Your qualification

  • We are looking for a highly motivated student in computer science, physics, engineering or related fields with a background and interest in building robust optomechanical setups and/or programming hardware solutions.

We offer

  • Flexible working hours (weekly working time max. 20 hrs/week)
  • Pleasant working atmosphere and a dedicated international team
  • The employment is paid on an hourly basis with 12,00 Euro (Bachelor's student) or 12,68 Euro (Master's student).

MPINB is committed promoting equal opportunities and diversity. We welcome applications from all backgrounds, regar-dless of gender, ethnicity, disability or sexual orientation.
