The Max Planck Society is Germany's premier research organization. The 86 Max Planck Institutes conduct research at highest levels, in the service of the general public, in the natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences, and the humanities.

The Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) is located at the Science Campus Hamburg-Bahrenfeld and investigates dynamical phenomena within matter down to the elementary timescales of atomic and electronic motions, the femtosecond or attosecond timescale. The focus is on the use of short wavelength ultrafast probes, such as X-rays or electron pulses, which are capable of measuring atomic and electronic structures in matter of all kinds.

The MPSD currently consists of two scientific departments focusing on solid state physics and theoretical methods in these fields. The MPSD is a partner in the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL), collaborating with the Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY), European XFEL (EuXFEL) and the University of Hamburg in the development of science based on the X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs).

For our Theory Department we are seeking the following on a parental leave replacement basis a

Software Developer (m/f/d)

Your position:

The successful candidate will work on the maintenance and development of the in-house scientific computer program OCTOPUS, a package aimed at the first principles simulation of the response of molecules, nanostructures and solids to arbitrary time dependent external perturbations and on improving the performance and massive parallelization of the code. He/She will also contribute to the training of the students in the proper use of the code and in the best software development practices used within the department. He/She will also support the software implementation of new concepts and algorithms.

The candidate should integrate into a very active and multidisciplinary international research group and would collaborate with the Department-IT personnel to coordinate all computer and IT services relevant for the Theory Department.

Your qualification:

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamical person to work on scientific software development aimed at high performance computing. The ideal candidate should have a university degree (master) in computer science, physics or chemistry and should have large experience in the development and maintenance of first principles codes and the ability to work and collaborate within a diverse team.

Working at MPSD requires the applicant to be fluent in English. Proficiency in German is preferred.

Our offer:

We offer an innovative environment, which will give you the opportunity to develop your own ideas at the forefront of ultrafast science embedded in the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL). We offer a position according to the German public pay scale (TVöD). Within the framework of a parental leave replacement, the appointment is limited to two years.

The Max Planck Society strives for gender equality and diversity. We welcome applications from all background.

The Max-Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals.

Your application:

To apply, please complete the online application form and attach your English CV and motivation letter as well as all relevant certificates latest 31st of January, 2022.
